The Mitsubishi group is a corporate group centered on companies that are involved in the flow of former Mitsubishi congromerate.

The foundation was "Tsukumo&Co." which the Tosa clan had run in Osaka (near Tosa Inari Shrine). Iwasaki Yataro, who was a Tosa clan, bought it as an individual company. And renamed the ninety-nine commerce as "Mitsubishi Shokai", it developed business mainly in shipping and trading.

Mark is a red Three Diamond (Mitsubishi Mark: The triangle rhombus mark adopted as the ship flag by the ninety-nine kyokai shop at the time of establishment is the prototype of the current Three Diamond · Mark Iwasaki family crest from the Tosa clan town " And the family of Yamauchi family of Tosa lord "Mitsukashi", derived from the name of Mitsubishi later.

Mitsubishi UFJ Bank, Mitsubishi Corporation, and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, which are regarded as the core of the Mitsubishi group, are called "Big-three companies of Mitsubishi group".

Companies that do not have "Mitsubishi" as their company name, such as NYK, JXTG Holdings, Meiji Yasuda Life Insurance, Tokio-Marine&Nichido Fire Insurance, Asahi Glass, Nikon, Kirin Holdings (formerly Kirin Brewery) And others). Companies without Mitsubishi's name do not use the Three Diamond Mark.

Among the former chaebol group companies, relatively unity is said to be strong, commonly referred to as "Mitsubishi is a nation". One example is the following event.

Headquarters, branch offices, etc. of Mitsubishi group companies are often located in buildings owned by Mitsubishi Estate or Meiji Yasuda Life Insurance. In addition, headquarters of group companies are often headquartered in Marunouchi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo.

Mitsubishi Electric's elevators and escalators are almost always installed in Mitsubishi Estate buildings (similarly, Mitsui Fudosan's buildings are almost always used by Mitsui Group's Toshiba products as well as Sumitomo Real Estate Design of the building is often handled by Nikken Sekkei (the former Sumitomo head office building department) but also outside the Sumitomo group).

The building owned by the Mitsubishi group almost always has a vending machine of Kirin Beverage installed.

There are many vehicles of group companies' company cars, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (currently virtually withdrawing from the large passenger car market, so many light and small cars) and Mitsubishi Fuso truck · bus (consolidated subsidiary of Daimler AG). Also, when a new model car is released from Mitsubishi Motors, a preliminary presentation limited to group employees will be held.

In MMC's recall hiding, Mitsubishi Tokyo UFJ Bank, Mitsubishi Corporation, Mitsubishi Corporation, and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries joined the reconstruction of the business.

For internal events, preference is given to restaurants that deal with products of Kirin Brewery and Kirin Beverage.

A group publicity magazine called "THE MONTHLY MITSUBISHI" is distributed to employees every month.

Urawa Red Diamonds (commonly known as "Urawa Reds", the predecessor is the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries football club, and the largest shareholder became Mitsubishi Motors Corporation as a result of the professionalization, but the largest shareholder also became Mitsubishi Motors Corporation He returned to heavy industry) is an official partner of the name.

Many customs have been continued even as of 2016.

The Mitsubishi Friday Congress (Abbreviation · Friday Party), which began in 1954, centers on activities on the second Friday of each month, a conference luncheon held by collecting the presidents and presidents of group companies.

In addition to this, maintenance and management of the Iwasaki Yanaosuke main building, which is a historic building, and the Mitsubishi Eastern Committee for the management of the group's guesthouse / social club are organized by 29 group companies.

Since the number of employees of the Mitsubishi group is 570,000, approximately 0.5% of Japanese are employees of the Mitsubishi group. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries also manufactures many of the fighting vehicles and aircraft for the JSDF, and Japan's defense industry can not talk without the Mitsubishi group. The F-15 fighter for the JSDF is produced by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries licensed from Boeing. Probably if the Mitsubishi group gives the coup to the Japanese government with total power, it will be easy to establish the state.

The JP Banks No.1-MEGA Bank

How well do you know Japanese banks? People living or managing business in Japan may need to know about them. In this series I introduce Japanese financial institutions several times.

First, roughly classifying Japanese banks, they are divided into three genres.

  1. Governmental bank
  2. City bank
  3. Regional Bank

The Japanese financial system is established by complementing each other's functions. I would like to write in detail, but if you explain these at once, it will be a tremendous amount. Unless you are working in Japan as a financial professional, it’s okay if you understand the major companies. Even Japanese people are minorities, including those who fully understand them.

This time I will introduce MEGA Bank. According to Wikipedia, the definition of city banks in Japan is as follows. "A city bank is a Japanese bank that is headquartered in large cities such as Tokyo and Osaka among ordinary banks and is developing a wide area." From a general point of view, the city banks are divided into four companies.

Among them, BMU / SMBC / Mizuho is commonly called MEGA Bank. Actually, Resona is overwhelmingly smaller in scale than the other three companies, and it is often MEGA Bank, three of them are told as city banks in Japan. This time I will focus on MEGA Bank and explain. As a digression, MEGA Bank each have a corporate color, and financial personnel often call each bank in color.

1.Mitsubishi-UFJ Bank (BMU)<TSE Code: 8304, headquater: Marunouchi>

Needless to say, it’s Japan's largest bank in capital and deposit holdings. The corporate color is red. As the name suggests, it is a major company of the Mitsubishi group, which is the representative conglomerate of Japan. (I'd like to post Mitsubishi group's comment if requested.) MEGA Bank It seems all, but after the merger period called "financial big bang" it became the current BMU. It may be a famous story that saved Morgan Stanley with the Lehman shock.

The profit structure of MUFG is as shown in the figure. 27% is domestic corporate loans, and 14% is domestic retail business revenue. What should be noticed here is profit from overseas business. Together with loans and other overseas businesses, 55% is actually profit from overseas business. This comes from the bank that was the predecessor of BMU, the Tokyo Bank. Tokyo Bank had a strong overseas base. The Bank of Mitsubishi who incorporated the Tokyo Bank into the organization looking forward a few decades can be said that it was inexperienced. Indeed, it is the BMU's most distinctive feature that it continues to show the most presence in overseas business in Japanese banks.

2.Sumitomo-Mitsui Banking Corp.(SMBC)<TSE Code: 8316, headquater: Marunouchi>

SMBC is the second-largest bank in Japan. The corporate color is green. Both Mitsui and Sumitomo are independent conglomerates, which are in line with Mitsubishi, but in the era of the financial big bang, both banks merged and became banks bearing the names of two conglomerates. Even now Mitsui Sumitomo is a separate group, companies related to finance are often operated jointly.

The profit structure of SMFG is as shown in the figure. 20% is for domestic retailing, 33% for corporate finance, and 21% is revenue from asset management. In fact SMBC has the top share as a Japanese bank in the domestic retail business. SMBC is the most popular name in western Japan, especially since Sumitomo Bank, the predecessor of SMBC, was founded in Osaka. If you live in Osaka or Kyoto, SMBC may be the most frequently seen store. In addition, Mr. Takashima who became the chairman of SMBC in recent years was a person who was in charge of international business at SMBC for many years, and it can be said that SMBC's enthusiasm to expand overseas business which currently occupies 26% of revenue.

3.Mizuho Bank<TSE Code: 8411, headquater: Otemachi>

Mizuho is the 3rd MEGA Bank. Unlike the other two companies, it does not belong to the conglomerate. Since it is a position to catch up with the other two companies, it tends to appeal to advanced initiatives. In addition, it has a close collaboration with affiliated securities company/trust bank, and it actively advertises catch phrases with "One Mizuho".

Unfortunately, for Mizuho, I could not clearly grasp the profit structure. Mizuho has strengths in its group strategy and shows its own management policy compared with the other two companies. Below is a list of group companies and a figure showing the proportion by type of revenue is put in place of the profit structure.

How was it? Japanese banking organizations may seem complicated to foreigners and it is actually complicated. This time I focused on three major companies. I would be happy if you could have a chance to use the bank in Japan if you would like to refer. Thank you for reading.
